    Book Review:
Current interest in the art of other cultures has opened our eyes to beauty that was once encountered only in academic publications. Until now, the vibrant flags of coastal Ghana have been treated largely as an "anthropological" phenomenon. While Adler and Barnard do not neglect the social function of these flags, the emphasis here is visual. The entire book is loaded with excellent full-color photographs that speak for themselves aesthetically. Fante society does not have a written language, and the tendency to use proverbs in speech is always reflected in flag imagery, making them powerful communication devices. Though the underlying meanings are pan-human, brief descriptions of the plates help transform exotic images into familiar concepts. An inexpensive, well-illustrated, accessible book.
