Antique African BAMILEKE Tribe Cameroon Carved Wood Footed Food Vessel Bowl
For your consideration is an authentic antique tribal artifact from Africa - a large footed and handled shallow food vessel
Bamileke People of Cameroon, Central/West Africa. The Bamileke are a Grassfields people, in the Northwest parts of the country. They are known for their beadwork masquerades, intricate tribal customs and rituals, as well as their incredible skill in wood carving. Animalia is a prominent theme in Bamileke masks and artifacts
Carved from a single piece of local hardwood. A thick, dry and encrusted dark grey/black patina finish. Four-legged oval-form body with extended handles at either side
One of the handles is pierced
The form resembles a stylized reptile or leopard
Most likely used for food preparation and serving
An exceptional piece, exhibiting the characteristic motifs and style of the Bamileke
Bamileke People, Cameroon - late 19th/early 20th century
